Nate Marquardt began his training in the martial arts as a teenager, studying the disciplines of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kickboxing, and Kenpo under instructor Alistair McNiven. After 3 years he also started training Freestyle Wrestling and training under BJJ expert, Ricardo Murgel, who he now has a 2nd degree black belt under. Active in sports throughout High School, he contends that he did not become involved in the martial arts until he saw footage of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Marquardt has also trained with Sanae Kikuta and the GRABAKA Dojo in Tokyo, Japan, under Shane Pitts who gave Nate a black belt in Japanese Ju-Jitsu, and under Mike VanArsdale in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

He currently trains with Greg Jackson's Mixed Martial Arts team based out of Denver, Albuquerque, and Montreal. Currently, Marquardt's coaches and trainers are Trevor Wittman (Boxing and Stand-up), Greg Jackson (MMA), Jonathan Chaimberg and Loren Landow (Strength and Conditioning), Leister Bowling (Freestyle Wrestling), Phil Nurse (Muay Thai and Kickboxing), and Firas Zahabi (MMA and Muay Thai). Marquardt also runs an academy, High Altitude Martial Arts located in Aurora, CO.

Nate first won the Pancrase Middleweight title in 2000. At the time, he was the youngest fighter to ever own the title "King of Pancrase." Marquardt fought in Pancrase until 2005 and won 7 title fights in the process. Nate left Pancrase as the champion to pursue his dream of fighting in the UFC. Nate has aquired wins over top fighters such as Wilson Gouveia, Demian Maia, Jeremy Horn, Dean Lister, Martin Kampman, Joe Doerkson, Ivan Salaverry and hopes to soon get a title shot and to become the Middleweight UFC champion.
