School Is Discipleship

School is Discipleship

Discipleship of children is a topic that my wife and I are very passionate about. One thing that many Christians do not understand is the spiritual significance of their children’s academic schooling. To put it briefly, all schooling is discipleship (public, government, private, or homeschool). The question is this: “Who is discipling your child Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM?” I wrote an academic paper three years ago for in one of my D.Min. seminars and I researched the state of the Church in America, which was and is significantly declining. We are losing the youth at an accelerated rate. My paper also showed that the majority of children with Christian parents were attending public government school. This means that the majority of the Church’s offspring are being indoctrinated five days a week, seven to eight hours a day for most of the year by a secular (non-Christian) institution and the curriculum which the government has put into place. In this section, l will address some of the reasons why many Christians think it’s ok to put children into public/ secular school and I will offer wisdom from God’s word which shows why there is no good reason to do this.

First, many Christians think that secular can be neutral. This is just not true! Secularism is humanistic. It’s man’s word over God’s word. It’s man-centered and not God-glorifying. Jesus said “He who is not with Me is against Me” (Matt. 12:30). If it’s not for Jesus, it’s from the enemy who wants you to think it’s not a big deal. Satan wants Christians to think that subjects like Math, Science, and Music are neutral. After all, those are just numbers, facts, and notes. But, Mathematics, Science, and Music should be to the praise of the Creator who made all things. Literature, History, Social Studies, Art, English, and any other school subject all should be based in a Biblical worldview with the goal of revealing God’s glory and bringing praise to Him. Not only that, but government school “Science” tries to remove the need for God in the Creation by calling everything a big cosmic accident and using evolution as the mode to get “from cosmic goo, to the zoo, and finally to you.” It completely contradicts God’s word (Genesis 1-11) with the idea of millions and billions of years and by denying the worldwide Flood. It denies the true Science (empirical) that corroborates the Bible (eg. finding soft tissue and blood in dinosaur fossils which proves that dinosaurs are not millions of years old). If government/ secular school is not neutral, but is an enemy of Jesus, why would we send our children to these institutions? Instead, our children should be taught (discipled) to the glory of God.

Another reason Christians give for why they don’t give their children a Biblical (Christian) education is that it’s not possible or practical. The cost of Christian private school, the need for both parents to have incomes, and the inability of the parent(s) to homeschool are some of the rationale behind it. Christian schooling is expensive, but how much are our children’s souls worth? When I was saved, I vowed to God I would never put my kids into government school because I knew how badly it had affected my spiritual journey. If it costs too much, homeschool them. It’s the best option anyway. Or, downsize and move into an apartment.

Some mothers believe they’re not equipped or qualified to educate their children. First, God has qualified Christian mothers. Many mothers think they’re not smart enough and don’t want to hold their children back. If our children become the most successful adults in the world, but they don’t know Jesus, we have failed. If we raise our children to know and follow Christ, we have succeeded even if they aren’t the smartest! But actually there are so many resources today and so many options that this is just not an issue. In fact, the opposite is true; homeschool is the best option for the academic success of your child, statistically (statistics and citations in my paper). You can do it and you can have a community who will help (Christian co-ops, Facebook groups, homeschool conferences, etc.)! Not only has God qualified and equipped mothers, but He has also commissioned them. The Bible teaches that the wife’s role in the family is caring for her children (Tit. 2:4-5; Pro. 14:1; Pro. 31) and the husband is to lead and provide for his family (1 Tim. 5:8; Eph. 5:23-26). This is only controversial because the world and culture says otherwise, but the truth is that it works the best because God designed it that way to reflect Christ and the Church. And what “career” is more important than raising the next generation? What could be more fulfilling than obeying God’s calling on your life? The Bible says “the wise woman builds her house” (Pro. 14:1) and therefore will disciple them in the Lord. It is also the duty of the father to raise the child in the “instruction and discipline of the Lord” (Eph. 6:4), and therefore it is the parents’ responsibility to ensure that they receive a Biblical Christian education.

Private Christian education is one way to do this, but I believe homeschool is the best and the most Biblical way to educate our children. There are a lot of objections for homeschool, but the objections just don’t add up, and statistics disagree with these objections. One objection is that children won’t be “socialized,” and often the cite the “weird” homeschool family they knew as a reason. This kind of anecdotal evidence doesn’t hold up to statistics, logic, or my own anecdotal evidence (ie. my children). On a daily basis, homeschool children interact with children of a wide range of ages (their siblings) along with receiving biblical counsel from their parent(s) for conflict resolution. Who is better to teach a child how to communicate and interact: the Christian parent or their 20-30 classmates who are the same age? Because of this, homeschool children also communicate well with adults. I notice that my children are able to carry conversations with adults at my friends’ homes rather than acting like a deer in the headlights. Regardless, there are homeschool co-ops that allow children to learn with other homeschool children (from families with the same values) on a regular basis. And with extra curricular activities and sports, homeschool children interact with a wide range of children from different backgrounds. Again, the idea that homeschool children are not socialized is not a reasonable argument against it.

This brings up another set of objections. Some people imagine homeschoolers as if they keep their children in a protective bubble. They worry that one day, the child will have to go to the “real world” and wont be ready because they have lived their whole life being protected from things like pornography and sexual immorality, drugs and alcohol, etc. This makes me think of the analogy of teaching a child how to cross the street. I don’t just tell my kids to go play in the street so they can learn about its many dangers. I teach them according to their ability and understanding. First I carry them. Then I walk with them hand in hand. Then I walk next to them. Then as I see that they understand the dangers and can handle themselves, I allow them to walk across with supervision and eventually I trust they can do it on their own. We must protect and train our kids so they can protect themselves and eventually protect and train their own families. Sending a child to the government school at a young age before they have been discipled is like sending them to play in the street without having shown them how to do it. And we also want to protect them from the immorality of the world for as long as possible. The earlier a child is exposed to something, the more of a problem it will be in their life. We want them to grow up with Biblical morality so that when they eventually run into those things, they know it is wrong and are rightly disgusted.

Along the same lines, some Christian parents believe our children should be missionary students in the public school system. This is in contradiction to the Biblical mandate to train and teach our children in the Lord. And, imagine if the Israelites in the Old Testament sent their children to the Philistines as missionaries 5 days a week. How would it have worked for them? No, our children are a precious blessing from the Lord and we need to be faithful to educate them/ disciple them to follow Jesus. Do not pass off your privilege and responsibility to educate your child to a secular government school system!

God has commanded us as parents to make disciples of our children. He showed us the way to do this in His word. He has given us commands and examples in the Bible of what discipleship of children should look like. God has equipped parents with the Holy Spirit and has given us so many resources to do so in America. If God is with us, if He lives in us, and He has commanded us, then we can trust that He will work in and through us to equip our children to be the people He intends them to be.

“Parents should not define success the same way the world does. Success is training up your child to know and walk with Jesus. Not only this, but Brian Ray discloses empirical evidence that homeschool is better than “public and private institutional schooling” in “academic performance, social and emotional development, performance in college,” and finally in the “real world.” Most importantly, his research reveals that the children grow up and hold onto the worldview of their parents better than in traditional school.” (Nate Marquardt, “Raising Healthy Children in the Ministry Fishbowl,” 9-10.)

Summary of the Marquardts' Mission

God called the Marquardts to move to Myanmar (Burma) to help save Children from trafficking, to care for and disciple them, to open a Christian international school (May, 2024), and to raise up leaders who will teach God's word. Nate was commissioned to pastor in 2018, has done international missions since 2015, has an M.T.S. from Gateway Seminary, and earned a D.Min. from Chiang Mai Theological Seminary. Tessa has homeschooled their four children since 2017.

We must FOLLOW Jesus

“Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him…” “…many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.” John 12:25-26, 42-43 ESV It’s possible to “believe” in Jesus and lose your life (ask Satan). True saving faith is shown in your walk with Jesus. #truth #bible #faith

What Is Life | Micah Applegate

My good friend, Micah Applegate, teaches from 1 Corinthians about life. How can we live to make an impact that will last? What should our motives be? What is the point of life? What will judgment day look like? Micah answers these questions and more.

1 Corinthians 3:10 (NIV) 10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved--even though only as one escaping through the flames.

1 Corinthians 13:1-13 (NIV) 1 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Time

We don’t know how much we have left. Our life is given, and it is taken away. How much time do you have left? How much time does your family or friend have left? This watch is my Dad’s, who passed away a few months ago. He had emphysema from smoking his whole life. Now, just a few days ago, one of my best friends from high school passed away. He literally drank himself to death. I’m heartbroken. This is yet another reminder that we are all on the brink of eternity. “…it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment…” We all will bow our knees face God one day to give an account of our life. There is no other name under heaven that saves but Jesus. If you are a Christian and you have the cure and you’re not sharing it, you need to question if you really have been cured. Jesus is the only way. We must bow our knees now before it’s too late. Turn from sin and run to Jesus- Now is the day of salvation and time is running out.

Farewell to UFC

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). Since I became a Christian, this has been one of my favorite passages in the Bible. Jesus said we must become like children to enter the kingdom of heaven. The humility that a child has is shown in their dependency on and trust in their parents. I have had many accomplishments and victories as well as many trials and upsets in my career. I have won 4 world titles and I have subsequently lost three of them. I have had many winning and losing streaks. I have battled chronic injuries and had 6 surgeries. I have learned that I can trust God in every situation and need to put him first. After 22 years as an athlete in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, I believe God is calling me in another direction.

I want to thank everyone that has supported me throughout my career, including the UFC, Strikeforce and Pancrase. I have many fans that have stuck by me in the ups and the downs and I want you to know that I really appreciate it. I have been blessed to work with so many of the best coaches and training partners in the world and I have much gratitude for every moment of it. I cherish all the relationships that have been formed through this sport we love. I am exceedingly grateful for those closest to me: my coaches, teammates, friends, wife and family. Above all, I thank God for his provision, protection, patience and guidance through my career.

I am also happy to say that I will still be involved in MMA on many levels. I will continue training in all aspects of MMA and I will also continue to run my sports ministry, Resurrection Jiu-Jitsu. I am currently pursuing a degree at Gateway Seminary, and I plan on using my experience in MMA and the UFC on the mission field. At this point, my family and I are praying for direction for where God is leading us globally and by what means. Wherever and however we go, I believe God will use MMA in some capacity, either teaching at a gym, coaching fighters, running a sports ministry, and/or teaching seminars. Either way, we are excited for this next season in our life as a family and we are confident that God is directing our paths!

Nate Marquardt has never fought a rematch in his 12-year-long UFC career, but that run may soon come to an end.

The former UFC middleweight title challenger and former Strikeforce welterweight champion wants a second crack at the man that defeated him last weekend – Vitor Belfort. The two MMA veterans battled in a middleweight contest in the main card of UFC 212, which took place last Saturday at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After three rounds of fighting, the three judges in charge of the verdict scored the fight 29-28 for the Brazilian.

The decision was a controversial call in many’s eyes, including Marquardt himself....
